Why choose outdoor tiles

Incorporating outdoor tiles into your garden, patio or balcony area is an effective and affordable way to add your personal style to any outdoor space. Outside tiles aren’t necessarily just for external use either – you can create a stunning indoor / outdoor flow by using matching kitchen tiles or living room tiles both inside and outside.

How to choose tiles for your outdoor space

Whether you’re intending to use outdoor floor tiles or outdoor wall tiles (or a combination of both) it’s important to make the right choice. So how do you go about choosing the right outdoor tiles for your project? Will you choose concrete effect or stone effect tiles? Or perhaps opt for slate effect or split face tiles?

There are so many options – wood effect tiles provide a durable alternative to real timber, anti-slip tiles create a safe and slip resistant surface in the (likely) event of rain here in the UK and textured tiles can add an extra dimension to your outdoor area.

To help you make the choice we put together our
Ultimate Guide to Outdoor Tiles‘, which also includes some handy information on the most suitable adhesives and grouts for tiling outdoor areas, as well as a ‘how to tile’ section.

Natural stone tiles

Natural stone tiles can be made from a range of materials – from granite and marble to limestone and slate. As well as being visually stunning, natural stone tiles offer many benefits and are highly durable, low maintenance and hard wearing. Opting for tiles with a brushed, sandblasted or tumbled finish as opposed to gloss also helps to add a degree of slip resistance – which is especially important if you intend to use swimming pool tiles.

We always recommend sealing natural stone tiles when they are installed. This helps to protect the tile and make it easier to clean. Sealing also helps protect the tiles from staining and discolouring, and assists with cleaning and stops dirt ingraining onto the surface. When choosing your grout colour we would suggest going for a darker shade as this will help to disguise any dirt or marks that may become visible over time.

Outdoor porcelain tiles

Porcelain tiles are well-suited for outdoor use because of the numerous advantages they provide. They’re particularly resistant to temperature fluctuations and their non-porous quality means that they have a particularly low absorption rate – so they won’t take on water and crack or warp when the temperature reaches freezing. They’re also very durable and simple to maintain and clean, ensuring that they’ll look great for years – an excellent long-term investment!

Exterior tile design ideas

Adding outdoor tiles to your garden can allow some extra fun to be added to the space, if your garden is a bit of a sun trap, you could consider implementing brightly coloured garden tiles in order to accentuate the openness of your outdoor space.

You could consider revamping your garden by using patterned tiles for your patio or path. Why not design your own unique pattern or even add an exotic feel with Moroccan inspired outdoor tiles?

For those looking to add tiles to their decking, a wood effect could be the ideal solution. This style of exterior tile is extremely durable and will introduce a very chic element to your patio.
